ABOUT MiPSET

Who We Are

Australia’s dedicated national centre for advancing, translating and deploying microphysiological systems.

WHO WE ARE

Australia’s National Centre for Microphysiological System Technology

The ARC Training Centre for Micro-Physiological System Technology — MiPSET — is Australia’s dedicated national centre for the development, translation, and deployment of microphysiological systems (MPS): the next generation of human-based testing platforms that are set to replace animal models in medical product development.

We bring together world-class researchers, industry innovators, and regulatory experts from four leading Australian universities — QUT, University of Melbourne, Monash University, and the University of Western Australia — united by a single, urgent goal: ensuring Australia plays a leading role in the global transformation of how medicines are discovered, tested, and brought to life.

OUR CENTRE

Our Vision and Mission

Building Australia’s scientific capability, advancing MPS technologies and connecting researchers, industry, government and regulators.

OUR VISION

Building world-class capacity and scientific leadership

To build world-class capacity and scientific leadership in Australia by developing and integrating technological innovations across the non-animal model value chain — delivering advanced solutions and impactful outcomes.

OUR MISSION

We exist to do three things exceptionally well

01

Train the next generation

We equip researchers, scientists, and industry professionals with the skills to innovate, translate, and deploy MPS technologies through a comprehensive, industry-facing training program spanning biodesign, regulation, and commercialisation.

02

Advance the science

We drive cutting-edge research to move MPS technologies from proof-of-concept in the lab to deployable products in the real world — developing smarter biological models, scalable manufacturing processes, and intelligent sensing systems.

03

Connect the ecosystem

We actively bridge the gap between academia, industry, government, and regulators, forging a collaborative national community that can tackle the hardest problems in MPS technology together.

WHY IT MATTERS

A global shift toward more human-relevant testing

The future of medical product development requires faster, more reliable and more human-relevant testing technologies.

THE CHALLENGE

The global landscape of medicine is changing. Drug testing on animals is costly, slow, and often fails to predict how humans will respond — with nearly 30% of drugs safe in animals proving toxic to humans, and 60% deemed effective in animals offering no benefit in people. Legislation in the US, EU, and UK is already steering the world away from animal testing, and the clock is ticking.

30%
Human safety

of drugs considered safe in animals may prove toxic to humans.

60%
Human efficacy

of treatments effective in animals may offer no benefit in people.

Global
Regulatory change

legislation is accelerating the transition away from animal testing.
